108 Peace Institute Lecture Series at Sikkim Alpine University

March 19, 2025: In an era marked by global uncertainty, social unrest, and pressing ecological challenges, the need for compassionate, ethical leadership has never been more urgent. Responding to this need, the 108 Peace Institute, in collaboration with Sikkim Alpine University, hosted a thought-provoking and heart-opening lecture on “Compassionate Leadership in the 21st Century for Global Peace” on 19th March 2025 at the university’s Namchi campus.

The distinguished guest and speaker for this event was Padma Shri Venerable Ngawang Samten, a globally respected scholar, Buddhist teacher, and a tireless advocate for interreligious harmony and moral leadership. Venerable Samten’s presence brought immense inspiration to the audience, offering not only intellectual insight but also spiritual nourishment.

During his address, Venerable Samten emphasized that leadership today is no longer just about strategy or power—it is about the ability to understand, to serve, and to unite. He explored the essential qualities of compassionate leadership: humility, empathy, and moral responsibility. These values, rooted in both Buddhist wisdom and universal human ethics, are what allow leaders to rise above personal interest and work toward the greater good of humanity.

The lecture was attended by 147 participants, including university faculty members, students, and staff. An engaging Q&A session followed the talk, with participants raising questions about how to embody compassion in leadership roles. Venerable Samten responded with humility and clarity, inspiring everyone to begin their journey toward inner leadership.

This event marks another milestone in the ongoing 108 Peace Institute Lecture Series, which seeks to bring together ancient wisdom and contemporary leadership to cultivate peace, resilience, and harmony within individuals, institutions, and across communities.
